When we moved into our new house last summer the lower level had this ugly brown carpet. Honestly speaking, it was the kids area so wasn’t really high on the to-do list. Then our dog developed a ph problem in her urine. Long story short, she started using the basement family room as her own personal bathroom. Once we got her squared away with the right food (she is doing great now) we were left with carpet that had a urine smell and I just couldn’t take it. So basement carpet redo got torpedoed to the top of the list.
We are breaking this up into three phases: Phase 1 – remove family room carpet and stain the concrete beneath, Phase 2 – remove the stair carpet and stain/paint the steps and finally Phase 3 – replace the carpet in the bedrooms. Phase 1 is going to be the biggest job and the most time consuming. Phase 3 the most expensive so that will come last. I am so excited to say that Phase 2 will not be too bad and probably have the most impact since you can see the steps from both upstairs and downstairs. I will have to send the kids to Grandmas for a weekend in order to do the staining of the stair steps. Grandma will love it and hubby and I will have a nice quiet weekend! It’s a win win for allllll!!!!!!
Here is a look at the beautiful brown carpet, and you can see the smelly offender! She’s so cute though, it’s hard to get mad at her.
On phase 1, I want it to be gray in color with a shiny look. I have seen this done in many of the houses that are in the Central Ohio Parade of Homes and I love the look. I don’t love the ticket price to have it done professionally though. After much research I have found a way to do this myself…..fingers crossed.
Phase 2 will have such a big impact both upstairs and down. I want white painted risers and stained steps. My wood floors upstairs are a gray wash but the wood on the steps is all stained very dark. I think I am going with the dark color for the steps to tie them in. The floor in the basement will be gray so I think it will be a nice transition and tie the dark wood to the gray.
Phase 3 will be new carpet in the 3 bedrooms downstairs. I will probably go with some sort of gray carpet to tie into the gray stained floor. Maybe……I haven’t thought that far ahead yet, I am still thinking about all the steps for the concrete stain!!!!!
I will keep you updated on the progress. Hopefully it all goes smoothly, fingers crossed!
