Today I am sharing with you my Summer mantle. Last summer we bought this house and I have had to make some changes in what I use to decorate my mantle for the various seasons and holidays. Why did I have to make changes you ask??? Well this fireplace is over 11 feet wide, stone from floor to vaulted ceiling and the mantle is an 8 inch tal,l 12 inch deep beam. Some of the things I have used in the past just wouldn’t work, they were too small. Any thing that goes on this mantle has to be substantial. So today I will share with you what I am using this Summer to decorate my mantle.

First order of business after moving in was what do I put on the stone above the mantle? In our last house we had a large mirror but here I really didn’t want to cover the stone as much. Also there were so many square/rectangular shapes I felt something round would be best. I decided on a huge clock, the kind that doesn’t have a back. I wanted the stone to shine through. And it had to be something that could be up year round, something I wouldn’t mind looking at all the time.
Now I wanted to use something floral that had some height. I used these pussy willow stems in tall glass vases to flank the clock.
I thought the bird house was appropriate for Summer. I got this bird house as a gift from my best friend when my father died. She wanted me to have something beautiful to remember him. I always think of her and him when I look at it.
Now for the boxwood ball I couldn’t find the tin cup I usually put it in so I took this white bowl and flipped it over. I think it tied the white candles in nicely and was pretty inventive if I don’t say so myself!!!!
Now that Winter is over I removed all the firewood from the hearth and moved the fireplace tools (the poker and shovel, etc.) to the downstairs fireplace. In their place I decorated with this Lantern and large vase. You can find similar lanterns here and here. The vase I got from Kohl’s several years ago and you can find similar here. Now with this large mantle I need much larger decor on it. I am slowly gaining more large decor, but lets face it…..the larger it is the more expensive it is!!! That being said, there is something to be said about simple decor in the summer. That’s one thing about summer I love, simple living….relaxed living.
I hope you enjoyed my Summer mantle and I would love to see any pictures of your Summer mantles! And I hope you check out my post on what we are doing with our basement floor redo. We are almost done with phase 1 and I can’t wait to share it with you!!!!
