Adding a rug under your bed can add softness, warmth and can finish off the design of your room. But what is the best rug size for a king bed? Today we will go over the different options that are best for this size bed.

If you have hardwood floors or tile then adding a rug can keep your feet warm when you get up in the morning, especially if you live in a colder climate.

As I said, putting a rug under a bed on hardwood or tile floors is a great way to add warmth on a cold day. That doesn’t mean that you only add a rug on these types of floors. Adding a rug on a carpeted floor is also a great idea!

Putting a rug on carpet is perfect for warmth and coziness. Plus it can bring the whole look of a room together so you see, rugs are perfect for all kinds of situations!

Best Rug Size for a King Bed

So now you know that you can put a rug under a bed no matter what type of flooring you have, what is the best size rug for under a king bed?! Let’s get into that now.

A typical king size bed is 76 inches wide. The rug should be about 2 feet wider than the bed. That means that your rug should extend from the sides and in total should be 8.3 feet wide. Now rugs do not come in that width, they are either 8 feet or 9 feet so going with either one of those will be just fine.

The typical king size bed is 80 inches long. Add 2 feet on to that and you have 8.67 feet. Obviously rugs do not come in that size.

Looking at the length and the width and adding two feet the best rug size for a king size bed is 8X10. If you want some extra length at the bottom then going for a 9X12 is a good choice.

Where to place a Rug Under a King Bed.

Choosing a 9X12 is also good if you want to have your rug extend all the way from the head of the bed past the foot. Diane from In My Own Style does this nicely with this gorgeous blue and white stripped rug.

Most of the time though designers place the rug after the nightstand and extending out past the foot of the bed. If you are doing this then an 8X10 is the perfect choice.

Other options for Rugs and King Size Beds

Typically most people will put a rug under the bed extending out on the sides and foot. That is the traditional way.

However there are some other options. You can place a set of rugs on the sides of the bed so when you get up you are standing on a small rug but it doesn’t go under the bed. This is perfect if you choose to have your bed up against a wall (my daughter prefers to do this with her bed).

Another option is to place a small rug at the end of your bed. You can put a bench at the foot of your bed for putting on and taking of shoes/clothes. The rug is great for keeping you nice and cozy.

Or you can get unique and show off your personality by adding an irregular shaped rug under your bed, or maybe even round!

Best Rugs for Bedrooms

Personally I love rugs to be super soft and cushy ( is that a real word?). When I say cushy I mean thick and plush so your feet just sink into it.

I have a post dedicated to the best places to buy rugs online so you should definitely check that out if you are in the market for a new rug.

If you want something more natural then you might want to give a sisal or jute rug a look. They are made of natural fibers and are perfect for a bedroom where the foot traffic is much lighter.

Final Thoughts on the Best Rug Size for a King Bed

It doesn’t matter what type of flooring you have, layering rugs over carpet is something that designers have been doing for decades! You can do it too.

Your rug doesn’t have to be a specific shape. Traditionally they are rectangular and sit under a bed but you are not limited to that.

You can choose a uniquely shaped rug to fit your personality and design style. Or go with smaller area rugs around the bed. It’s your bedroom so the only person you need to please is yourself!
