I have always loved the simplicity of Black Windsor Chairs and what they bring to the design of a room. It’s a simple style of furniture that will always have a place in just about any design style.
I have black wooden chairs in my dining room that could almost be considered Windsor chairs. I painted them black to go with my style but Windsor chairs come in just about any color you can think.
Many of the styles I will show you today come in other colors both painted and stained. But before we get into which ones are the best let’s discuss a little bit about Windsor style.
What is Windsor Style Furniture?
Windsor style furniture is a popular form of wooden chair that has spindles extending from the wooden seat extending down to form legs and up to form the back.
The windsor chair became popular in the mid-18th century being used as a desk chair. Now it’s mainly popular in the UK and the United States. Although it’s produced in many different locations.
Are Windsor Chairs Out of Style?
Windsor chairs are one of those types of furniture that will never go out of style. Their origins date back to the mid 1700’s from Windsor castle and made their way across the ocean to the colonies in the late 1700’s.
These chairs are still wildly popular today. While mostly used in farmhouse or cottage styles these chairs can easily be used in any design style because of their clean lines and simple structure.

Windsor Style Benches
I think my favorite thing about Windsor chairs are the simple and clean lines. My favorite piece of furniture in the Windsor style are the benches.
I love all the benches here but the high back of number six is my favorite of these three. This one is from Target and very reasonably priced.
Number 8 has a much lower back but this one has a lot of style with the curved edges. It has a ton of style and from Crate and Barrel you will pay a little more for this one.
The only one of the bunch to have arms is number 13. This one is from Wayfair and sits in the middle price wise of the other two. I absolutely love that it has arms!
Windsor Style Bar Stools
Most of the time when you are looking for chairs a store will also sell a style in bar stool form. There are two different types of bar stools, counter height and bar height. Make sure you measure the height of your counter so you know which kind you should get.
I won’t discuss each one of them but my favorites are numbers 4 and 10.
I love number four because it’s just the classic Windsor style. It has the tall back and the clean lines.
Number 10 is unique and curved. It looks like it would be very comfortable and if you know me then you know that I love comfort!
Black Windsor Chairs
Of all the chairs I show here and many you will find online I just love numbers 5, 7, and 11. I love number 5 because it has the classic Windsor style but the top horizontal piece is a little more chunkier. Giving it a more substantial feel.
Number seven is a favorite because like the bar stool it has curves and I love curves! These chairs just scream come sit in me for a while!
And number 11 is in the classic Windsor style that is just gorgeous. It has the simplest of lines and so much style.
