How to Stop Tulips from Drooping

Sharing is caring!

The first time I bought tulips I was so excited, but that excitement turned to disappointment. I put the flowers in the vase, and within a couple of hours they were completely dropping over the edge of the vase. The arrangement was a total fail.

I am going to show you how to stop tulips from drooping so you will have a gorgeous flower arrangement this spring. There are four things you need to do but one of them is the total game changer! I mean it! Stick around and find out what the secret is.

How to Stop Tulips from Dropping

I went to my favorite place to buy flowers, Trader Joe’s, and picked up some gorgeous salmon colored tulips. They were just too pretty to pass up!

I like to put my cut flowers in this pitcher I got from Target. It’s white and looks great with any color flowers.

Cut your tulip tips on the angle.

First, you need to cut the tips off the ends of the tulips. Make sure you cut them at an angle so your flowers can soak up the most water.

You can see that the tulips lying on the counter are getting a little brown on the ends. They need cut off so the flowers can take on water.

Put flower food in the water.

Most flowers come with a flower food packet. Make sure you put it in the water of the vase and let it dissolve. This food will really help your flowers do the best they can.

If your flowers didn’t come with a packet, you can easily purchase some on Amazon or try asking the someone who works there if they have any for you.

Always, always, always remove any leaves that would be under water when putting flowers in a vase. These leaves will turn yellow and become a gross moldy mess and will shorten the life span of your floral arrangement.

Add a penny to the water!

This is the secret ingredient! The copper in the penny will keep those flowers from dropping! But not just any penny.

The penny you choose needs to be made before 1982 because prior to that year the percentage of copper in the penny was higher. This will magically keep your flowers from falling.

Change the water every day or two.

Finally, you need to change the water every day or two to keep the flowers as fresh as can be. Just make sure you have more flower food and keep that penny in there!
