Christmas Theme Ideas
How do you choose a theme for Christmas decorating? Walking the aisles of Christmas decor can be overwhelming.
A lot of times you come home and find that all the lovely items you bought at the store don’t work together or they don’t work with the decor you already own.
That can be super frustrating and I am here to help. Here are some big ideas you can think about to get you started.
Choose a color palette
Start off with a simple choice of colors. For example, I love red and white or burgundy and gold. A lot of people choose blue and white.
If you choose a color theme for a room then go with it and go all in! Look at these gorgeous color theme in some amazing rooms.
I absolutely love this theme of white and gold. It’s gorgeous! Using white and gold all over the tree and in the gift wrapping below is a fabulous use of a theme.
This is my dining room from last year and I have a silver and red color theme. All of the ornaments are silver or red as well as the ribbon on the Christmas tree. The decor on the table as well as the buffet are all silver or red with a smattering of white.
Kerri Anne takes blue and white to the next level here. While blue and white isn’t a traditional color scheme it’s absolutely gorgeous!
If you decide to go non-traditional make sure you go all in. Don’t just do a little here and there because it won’t look right. Use it everywhere and it looks intentional.
Choose a pattern
There are a lot of popular patterns used in Christmas decor. I personally love using plaid. To me, it’s very traditional and welcoming.
You can go with polka dots or stripes. Just like with a color theme, choose a pattern and go all in! Take a look at some of these gorgeous spaces and the patterns used.
My dog Lilly loves the plaid theme too!
This is a great example of a stripped theme tree. I love the curly ornaments and the stripped ribbon.
I love the plaid theme in this family room. The stockings are similar but not exactly the same. The plaid pillows, throw blanket, and cozy fire makes you want to curl up and take a nap!
Choose a Floral
I love using a certain type of floral in each room. What does that mean? Go with a certain type of garland or flower for a room.
I like to use red and silver in my dining room and I add red poinsettias as well. In my family room I love a good cedar garland and use it in many places.
So on top of the color scheme and pattern choose a floral that you can use in a room.
Sorry for the reflection in this photo, I am not the best photographer. Here you can see my plaid pillows in cooperation with my garland on the mantel and light fixture. You absolutely can mix and match themes in the same room!
Look at all the coastal decor in this room! I love the use of palm branches and eucalyptus as well as other natural elements such as the starfish and coral.
Choose something you love
My mother-in-law loves snowmen, I love Santas. You can choose snowflakes or something else that says Christmas and use it all over a room.
Consider it an installation of whatever makes you happy.
I absolutely love these vintage candles my mother-in-law gave us. So I decided to decorate my kitchen all around vintage decor and it turned out fabulous!
I love the snowflake installation in this room. Not only does the tree have snowflake ornaments but the wall next to it has different kinds of snowflakes.
How to Choose Your Christmas Theme
First, you need to go through what you have and if you are anything like me that can be a lot of stuff.
Choose what makes you happy and decide what room you want to use it in. Gather all items that fit that theme and decorate that room.
Then when you are done you should head on out to the store and purchase things you need to fill in what is missing.
I like to write it down or make a note on my phone so that I don’t get distracted at the store with all the bright shiny things. Keep organized and only purchase what you need.
Another thing you can do is take items from your stash that you are not using and transform them into items you need.
You can change the color of ornaments to fit your theme with a little spray paint or glitter.
