How to Get the Cozy, Timeless Nancy Meyers Aesthetic in Your Home
Layer in Natural Textures and Materials
One of the most iconic characteristics of a Nancy Meyers home is layered textures. When I say textures, I mean velvet pillows on a woven sofa, a chenille throw blanket on the couch, and linen drapes.
Use natural materials too, like jute rugs. You can even layer rugs for an additional effect.
In the bedroom below, you will see lots of wonderful pillows, a woven bench next to a bed with luxurious bedding, and a linen throw blanket. You will also notice a natural jute rug and an iron chandelier.
This bedroom below has a gorgeous woven headboard and very luxurious bedding you can dive right into. Next to the bed, flanking each side, are two wooden nightstands. The added texture on the walls and ceiling of the vertical shiplap adds an additional Nancy Meyers aesthetic.
The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home
In every Nancy Meyers movie, you will notice that the kitchen is always the heart of the home. They aren’t sterile kitchens that look like they have never been used. They are kitchens that have seen lots of Sunday dinners, holiday baking, and weeknight meals.
Having everyday dishes on open shelving is not only convenient and practical but is also beautiful. Wood cutting boards leaning on the backsplash are not only textural but are within reach when they are needed.
Adding artwork to the shelves or cookbooks, as well as a lamp, really brings out this aesthetic.
Timeless Color Choices
Nancy Meyers rarely chooses trendy colors for the spaces. Her spaces are always full of colors and wallpapers that will stand the test of time.
It’s best to stick with a neutral color palette with understated accent colors. Some popular Nancy Meyers accent colors are earth tones, muted blues, sage, and navy.
I love the nautical bathroom below. It gives you the feel of being nautical without it being shoved in your face. You won’t find anchors, but you will see rope-framed mirrors, nautical navy grasscloth wallpaper or nautical-inspired light fixtures.
She achieves the look without having to do it in accessories.
Comfortable Lived-in Furniture
Every movie that Nancy Meyers has designed has furniture that you could sit on for hours and read a book. It’s comfortable, many times oversized.
One noticeable attribute about the furniture she uses is a lot of them have slipcovers. And there are always wood accent tables.
I love the slipcovered look of the chair and ottoman in the photo below. The skirt on the furniture is so Nancy Meyers.
Fresh Plants and Flowers, especially Hydrangeas
Plants and flowers bring life to a room, so it isn’t a surprise that Nancy uses a lot of them in her set designs. Her favorite would be hydrangeas.
Would you like to save this?
Built-in Bookshelves
Almost every movie that Nancy has designed has incorporated some kind of built-in bookshelves. They add a place to put books and plants, but also family photos. They create a familial space and give a real lived-in look.
Gallery Walls
Gallery walls are the perfect place to add photos of the family from photo shoots to candid shots from travels. Creating a gallery wall gives the room a sophisticated look but also adds the warmth of family photos.
I love in this photo that they created a gallery wall of artwork in muted colors. That is so Nancy Meyers.
Natural Light
Abundant natural light is a must in almost every Nancy Meyers room. Tons of windows and skylights will really help give you the Nancy Meyers aesthetic.
A Collection Over Time
The Nancy Meyers aesthetic is a lived-in look. It starts with comfortable furniture, family-friendly artwork, and a collection of a life well lived.
The perfect place to display these collectibles is in built-in bookshelves.
If you don’t have built-ins, then create a vignette on a side table or ottoman of some of your favorite treasures.
