Gray floors have been a popular trend in home design for several years, but as with all design trends, the question arises: are gray floors still in style? Is it still the go-to choice in 2024, or are we seeing a shift toward new trends? Let’s explore the evolving role of gray floors in today’s design landscape.
The question arises do you want to go trendy or timeless? It depends on your plan. Will you want to sell your home in a few years? Will you want to remodel when the trend changes? Do you plan to stay in your home until the end of time?
The truth is, it doesn’t matter to me what you or anyone else do. All that matters is what you want, what you like. So let’s get into the do’s and don’ts then you decide what’s best for you!
Are Gray Wood Floors Still in Style?
When looking at gray wood floors what you really see is a gray wash. You will see a bit of gray and a bit of brown. Should you refinish or install gray wash wood floors?
The quick answer is no. The cool gray wood floors are definitely heading out of style and they are being replaced with warmer tones.
Don’t get me wrong, if you already have these floors you can make them look stunning. I have these floors in almost my entire first floor! So don’t despair, you can totally make them work.
One thing I encourage you to do whether you have gray wash wood floors or warm browns is to stay away from the shiny top coat. Instead, go with a matte finish.
That is what is on trend and honestly, if you have kids or pets you will thank me because matte floors won’t show scratches like shiny floors do.
If you are looking at LVP you will see that gray has been the go-to color for a very long time. If you plan to install these types of floors I encourage you to go with warm wood rather than gray.
But truly if you love the look of the gray go for it! All that matters is what you love.
Are Gray Carpet Floors Still In Style?
Here is where things get tricky. There are a lot of if’s and but’s here.
If you have gray wash floors then you should not get gray carpet. This is too much gray on gray. In this case get a warm tan or beige instead of gray.
If you have warm brown wood floors then yes, you can get carpet. Just don’t use it all over. Use it only in one room or a stairwell and hallway.
This is a great example of mixing gray carpet and natural wood tones. Very well done indeed!
The problem with gray carpeting is the undertone. They can have pink/violet or green undertones. This can make things tricky when picking paint colors or colors for large pieces of furniture or cabinetry.
If you are putting carpet in then you are probably safer to stay away from gray, especially if you don’t have an eye for undertones.
Are Gray Tile Floors Still In Style?
The quick answer here is yes. Especially if those tiles have other colors in them, like white, black, or beige.
If you want a solid gray tile then it’s best to go with a medium gray or dark gray, especially if you have a tile that has a unique shape.
Stay away from solid light gray tiles, they are definitely not on trend.
Personally I like to stick with tile that has a timeless look like marble. Especially when you use it in creative shapes.
I absolutely love these marble floors. They have the perfect mix of colors and the unique shape gives it so much character. Mixing it with the rectangular tiles on the outside gives the hexagonal shape the look of a rug.
Another unique pattern is to go with a checkerboard. Using gray tiles instead of black gives it a softer look.
Here the gray and white checkerboard pairs with the marble on the stairwell and dark wood tones in the woodwork.
