The Best Wall Color for Gray Floors

Gray floors are very popular right now but it can sometimes be really hard to choose the right wall color to go with them. Today I want to share the best wall color for gray floors and my tips on how to choose the perfect one!

Choosing wall colors can oftentimes be extremely frustrating. Many people go to the paint store, get a ton of samples and create a quilt of paint colors on their walls. They look at them over a few days and can narrow it down, but making that final decision is so hard.

No one wants to paint a room, finish and realize you don’t like the color. I have done that and it’s not a good feeling. So today I am going to share all my tips and tricks on how to pick the right paint color to go with your gray floors.

Best Wall Color for Gray Floors

Now the first thing I am going to recommend is not to go out and pick a bunch of colors and paint them on your walls. I recommend going with a company called Samplize.

Samplize will send you a 12×12 peel-and-stick sample of all your colors and when you are done with them you can just throw them away.

If you get little paint samples you use barely any of it, then you are left with this little can of paint and nothing to do with it. Those samples are poor-quality paint and not recommended for actual use. It’s hard to get rid of paint, much easier to toss a Samplize sample.

What Paint Colors to Avoid

Let’s start off with colors you should not be using.

I know that it’s tempting to go with a gray paint color to go with your gray floors but let me tell you why you shouldn’t. All paint colors have undertones and it’s really hard to match up undertones between floors and paint colors.

If you want to go with a mid-toned to light gray paint color then you really need to be dead on accurate when it comes to matching the undertones with the floor. That’s super hard to do.

Another reason you don’t want to go with a light or medium gray is that it’s going to make your room feel really institutional and depressing.

Think about a cloudy gray day and how that makes you feel. Sort of like taking a nap or wanting to do nothing. This is how your life is going to be every day, that’s not healthy.

I would also stay away from bold colors. You might think these would be great for pairing with gray floors but it really ends up being too much.

For bold colors, use them in accessories or maybe in accent rugs. They can easily be switched out for seasons and holidays and won’t become overwhelming.

Dark Colored Wall Colors for Gray Floors

I said not to use light or medium gray colors on the walls but dark gray is a little different. Dark gray tends to give a lot of character and contrast to lighter colors which makes them a good choice.

Be careful not to use too dark a color on all the walls or the room might start to feel like a cave. If your room doesn’t get a lot of natural light then only use the dark gray on an accent wall or in a situation where there is a wainscotting that is painted white and the wall above is gray. This will help tremendously.

Here are my favorite dark gray colors to pair with gray floors:

I really like Water’s Edge. It’s the perfect mid-toned blue color that is muted by the addition of gray. This color is considered a neutral because it pairs really well with just about any color.

Dark Blues for Gray Floors

Dark blue is a great color to pair with gray floors! My favorite is a navy blue.

Since Navy is such a dark color though, like darker grays, you need to be careful that you don’t create a cave instead of a beautiful room.

You can use navy in many ways like dark grays. In fact, I have a whole post dedicated to decorating with navy blue!

Here are some of my favorite navy blues to pair with gray floors:

Sherwin Williams Naval

A swatch of Sherwin Williams Naval.

Naval is a gorgeous color with slight purple undertones.

Benjamin Moore Hale Navy

Hale Navy is my favorite navy paint color. It has slight purple undertones with a touch of gray which makes it a little different from Naval.

This color is a lot like Hale Navy but it’s slightly lighter. Same undertones with a touch of gray to it.

Sherwin Williams In The Navy

A swatch of Sherwin Williams In The Navy.

In The Navy is a true blue navy blue but it’s the darkest of all the navy’s listed here.

Best Neutral Wall Colors for Gray Floors

White is a great color to pair with anything. You just have to pick the right white color. Just like gray, there are 50 shades and they are all very different.

For gray floors, I would not choose a warm white paint color. Stay away from them for sure! I would stick with neutral whites and cooler whites. Definitely avoid any that have yellow or peach undertones.

Here are my favorite white wall colors to pair with gray floors:

Sherwin Williams Nebulous White

A swatch of Sherwin Williams Nebulous White.

You can tell just by looking at this color that it has a fair amount of gray in it. It’s not considered a gray but lends itself to that side.

Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White

A swatch of Benjamin Moore Decorator's White.

Decorator’s White definitely has cool undertones. It’s a bright white paint color that will pair nicely with gray floors.

Sherwin Williams Pure White

A swatch of Sherwin Williams Pure White.

I know I said to stay away from yellow undertones but this color also has gray undertones and that keeps it from being too far warm. Pure White is a wonderful choice to pair with gray floors.

Sherwin Williams Extra White

A swatch of Sherwin Williams Extra White.

Extra White is a very bright white paint color and probably one of the few that would be considered a neutral white with minimal undertones.

Sherwin Williams Snowbound

this is a paint swatch of Snowbound by Sherwin Williams.

Snowbound is also considered one of the few whites that is neutral. It has slight purple and pink undertones but for the most part you can’t really notice them.

Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace

Chantilly Lace is by far the brightest of all the whites listed here today. It has slight blue undertones which puts it on the cool side.

Benjamin Moore Paper White

A swatch of Benjamin Moore Paper White.

This is a gorgeous white that has slight undertones of green and blue (which makes it a cool color) but it also has a touch of gray which keeps those undertones more muted. I chose this color to paint the entire first floor of my home and it’s simply gorgeous! And I have gray hardwood floors;)

Benjamin Moore Super White

A swatch of Benjamin Moore Super White.

Super White is a cool-toned white that is also very bright. This is a great color for walls but also for trim with gray floors.

The Best Greens to Pair with Gray Floors

The best green to use would be a sage green.

Sage green is unique because it is a green with a lot of gray in it. The gray really tones down the brightness of green and gives it a very mellow feeling. These colors look amazing when paired with gray flooring.

Oh, how I love sage green! They are so hot right now! I just painted an accent wall in my daughter’s bedroom a sage and it’s simply gorgeous!

Here are my favorite sage greens:

This one is my favorite sage green from Benjamin Moore. It was the color of the year in 2022! It’s mid-toned with a gorgeous depth of color.
