Coastal Kitchen Trends

I think the “Coastal vibe” has really been trending. From Coastal Grandmother to Coastal Farmhouse, there is a huge surge of people wanting to add the coastal vibe to every room in their home.

I have been incorporating a coastal feel to my home using several different elements. Today, we are going to talk about the kitchen and how you can add coastal elements to give the feel of vacation all throughout the year.

Here are some of the best elements to create a coastal kitchen and what is trending this year. You don’t have to do all of them, especially because you have to work with what you have space-wise. Just try to incorporate what you can.

Lots of Natural Light

Probably one of the most important things is to make sure you have ample natural light. Lots of windows and/or skylights are key. If you don’t have a lot of windows, then there are a few tricks to create the feel of a bright space.

You can go all white to brighten things up. You can also add lots of reflective surfaces, such as mirrors, glass, shiny light fixtures, etc.

This space has a wall of windows, which really brings in tons of natural light. Having such a dark counter can really make the room feel dark, but having all the natural light really keeps that from happening.

This is another kitchen with tons of windows, and when you pair it with all white cabinets, counters, and backsplash, you really brighten up everything!

Coastal Colors

There are a ton of colors that will give you the coastal feel. Here are some of my favorites:

  • white
  • blue
  • navy
  • blue-green
  • light beige
  • gold
  • silver
  • blue-gray

What I love is that there are a ton of colors, so you can really make your kitchen your own by picking colors you love.

This stunning kitchen from A blissful nest incorporates lots of white and light blue. She also has a natural element in the woods. Gold in the light fixtures and silver hardware really bring in some amazing elements.

Here is a great example of a blue-green in a kitchen, or rather, I believe this is a pantry. The white counters and vertical shiplap really brighten up the pantry.

Open Shelving

Open shelving is a great way to display beautiful treasures and tasteful kitchen accessories.

This kitchen has cabinets pained in Benjamin Moore Simply White with a marble subway tile backsplash in a herringbone pattern.

I love displaying things on open shelves in the kitchen that are functional. Here you can see some beautiful mixing bowls as well as some glass vessels.

This set of wood open shelves is more of a display place showing off coastal accessories, personal photos, and a pretty plant.

Shiplap and Beadboard

Shiplap is wood that was used to build ships and was repurposed in the building of homes. It just seems natural that it would be used in a coastal manner.

Beadboard is also perfect. It gives a great cottage and relaxed feel. Both of these materials are great for the kitchen because they are really easy to clean. If you are a messy cook, like me, then you can easily clean off these surfaces.

Here shiplap is used in a vertical manner on the backsplash. I really like using it vertically, it seems more elevated and modern than using it horizontally.

Shiplap on the ceiling is amazing! It gives that fifth wall some texture and interest and a whole lotta style!!!!!

Mixed Metal Finishes

Mixing metals is one of those big no-nos that designers used to say never to do. But today we say heck yeah! Mix away!

Mixing metals isn’t hard at all, and it gives your home an elegant feel.

Here you can see gold light fixtures with a silver faucet. They are right next to one another and it looks great!

Here we have a silver faucet with gold hardware on the cabinet. Again it looks elegent and purposeful.

Large Kitchen Island

Who doesn’t love a large kitchen island! In coastal design, large kitchen islands are great, but if you don’t have a big island, it’s not a killer if you love the coastal feel.

This kitchen island is to die for! It’s so big that they were able to put a sink in it and open shelving on the end.

This is another great example of a big kitchen island. It’s very long to accommodate ample stools for entertaining.

Coastal Backsplashes

One of the fixed elements in a kitchen is the backsplash. Here are some examples of beautiful backsplashes that are perfect for a coastal kitchen.

I love a good white backsplash. You can use a solid white with no other color or pattern, or you can do one that has a unique shape. Here, the white tile has a little iridescence to it. Perfect for the gorgeous view out of the windows!

I also love the look of a mosaic tile using coastal colors. Here, the backsplash incorporates the color from the island into a beautiful, cohesive coastal kitchen.

Woven Textures

Woven textures and warm woods are a must in any coastal room.

Here you have these gorgeous rattan light fixtures and a wonderful wood island with wood stools. I like that the rest of the kitchen is white. If you had all wood cabinets on the perimeter, it would just be too much wood. Incorporating a lot of white keeps the balance just right.

Here, we not only have woven light fixtures (which you actually see a lot in coastal kitchens), but you also have a woven texture on the stools.

Natural Materials

Natural materials are a must in coastal rooms. Here we have a natural woven light fixture, wood spoons on display next to a wood cutting board, a woven basket holding vegetables, and don’t forget about the marble countertops, which are also a natural material!

We have a lot of natural elements here, too. The wicker bar stools, wood floors, and wood on the island, a wooden stand on the island with fruits and vegetables on it, not to mention the wood beams on the ceiling.

Coastal Lighting

Lighting in the kitchen is, in my opinion, one of the most important design elements. It can really make or break a space.

In a coastal kitchen, look for woven light fixtures, all glass, or silver/gold with a touch of glass. It doesn’t really matter what the shape is, more what it’s made of. Just make sure you get the size right. Too small pendents get lost in the kitchen, and too large ones look ridiculous.

This island has gorgeous woven pendents that are the perfect size and number.

I love the glass and metal pendents over this coastal island. They allow you to take in the other aspects of the room, but also are gorgeous by themselves.

Coastal Accessories

Coastal accessories are mainly anything that is natural. Wood and anything woven, glass display pieces for food, and plants. I say plants because they bring life into your space.

In this pantry, you have a cutting board displayed against the backsplash, glass containers with wood lids for flour and sugar, and woven baskets as drawers. Not to mention the gorsous piece of artwork hanging on the wall.
