How to Choose the Best Paint Color for Your Cabinets

There are a few factors to keep in mind when choosing a paint color for your cabinets. First, consider the overall design style of your home and the architecture. The paint color you choose should complement that style.

Secondly, consider the paint colors used in the other areas of your home, particularly in the adjoining rooms. You want something that will coordinate with those colors.

I also highly recommend using Samplize to purchase a peel-and-stick sample of any color you might be thinking of using. It’s a safe and easy way to test paint colors in your home that won’t break the bank.

2026 Kitchen Cabinet Paint Color Trends

Wood cabinets have been popular for, well, like ever. The specific tone of wood is what you need to look at for a trendy but also timeless look.

White kitchens have also been timeless and classic, and therefore have been popular for centuries! But other trends have emerged, and there are many more colors that are trending. We will go into all of that here.

White kitchens

White kitchens are classic and timeless. They will always be trending, no matter what decade you are in. If you are the type of person who loves classic design, then I strongly urge you to consider white kitchens.

Despite what many people think, white kitchens are easy to clean. All you need is a Magic Eraser. That’s what I use, and food stains come right off the cabinets.

This kitchen is simply gorgeous with white cabinets, marble counters, and gold accents. I love the mixed metals with the bronze teapot on the stove. The wooden accents in the cutting boards, spoons, and accent on the vent hood really warm this space up.

There is nothing more classic than a black and white kitchen! By adding wood accents and the brick above the cabinets, you really warm the stark black and white up! The plants and fruit are the perfect accessories to add life to the kitchen.

This is an all-white kitchen at its best. I love how clean and sophisticated it looks. I also love the mixed metas in the hardware with the gold faucet, silver hardware, and stainless steel appliances.

If country or farmhouse style is more your thing, and you wonder if an all-white kitchen will work, think no further! This kitchen is all white with open shelves displaying some of the most gorgeous pottery you will see. The warm wood floors, chairs, and island really make the space feel lived in.

The added touch of flowers and ducks makes this space so special.

Best White Paint Colors for Kitchen Cabinets

I have a whole post dedicated to this topic (you can read it here) and go into a lot of details but here is a quick look at my favorites:

Gray Kitchens

Gray has been popular for a long time now, and it’s still a very popular choice to use on cabinets. I tend to stick to a lighter to mid gray/greige; however, a bold gray on an island is a really great choice too!

While I love an all-white kitchen, a very light gray paired with stunning gold hardware and a simple subway tile backsplash can be equally stunning. I also love the wood accents in the floors, vent hood, and window treatments; they really warm up the hard features of a kitchen.

If you are a big fan of marble, then I suggest going with gray cabinetry. They pair perfectly together! I also love the mixed metals in the hardware and light fixtures, the warm touches in the shelves, and the life that the plants and flowers bring to the room.

Gray cabinets look great with dark wood counters, too! This space is perfect for a kitchen, but also a laundry room.

Another thing I love here are the black tile herringbone floors. You can have a simple tile like this one, but when you arrange it in a fun pattern and add white grout to make the pattern stand out, you have a real statement piece!

These medium to dark cabinets are stunning, especially here with all the natural light coming in the windows. They look great with the white counters and gold hardware.

Best Gray Paint Colors for Kitchen Cabinets

Here are some of the most popular gray paint colors you can use for your kitchen cabinets:

Blue Kitchens

Blue is very popular in many different design styles and can really bring a wonderful feel to your home. A bold dark navy or a cool coastal blue can evoke different feels.

One trend is to have the island a different color from the perimeter cabinets. It makes the island the star of the show, and this island is definitely a star! This kitchen is gorgeous with the light wood tones and marble counters. I could do some serious cooking in this kitchen!

Yet another trend is having the lower cabinets a different color than the uppers. Having the lower cabinets be a dark color really grounds the space.

I love how the blue looks with the wood counters and the antique red stool!

Here we have a decidedly coastal kitchen. The stools are from Serena and Lily and are so beautiful! I love the light color on the island and how it looks with the lighter wood tones.

I love dark blue, but the lighter blue also creates a fun and relaxing feel. Here are the best ones:

Green Kitchens

One trend that has been going strong the last few years is creating an earthy feel in your home. Something that is very nature-inspired. Green cabinets can really bring your kitchen to life.

Sage green has made a resurgence in the last few years. As you can see in the photo above its a wonderful color for cabinets. I love how well it pairs with gold hardware and hardwood floors.

Dark green is a wonderful color, especially on bottom cabinets. It really grounds the space. Green brings a feeling of nature into your home and I love how they paired it with a natural stone floor and the colorful rug.

Black Kitchens

I know, you are thinking, lady, you are crazy! But hear me out! If you have a kitchen with lots of windows, therefore lots of natural light, then going with black kitchen cabinets might be a great choice for you!

Combine them with white counters and light wood floors, and you have a stunning space that is warm and welcoming.

The key to having a black kitchen is to make sure you have a good amount of natural light and balance the black with lots of lighter colors, particularly white.

You can see they did this beautifully here by the white backsplash. I also love how well black cabinets go with wood tones!

If you love black cabinets but just can’t do it on all the cabinets, try just going black on the island. As you can see, this looks stunning in this kitchen, especially when you pair it with white and light wood tones!

This is a unique way to use black cabinetry by pairing it with a lighter color cabinet. The two-tone scheme here is very stylish and will definitely make your kitchen one of a kind!

I can’t get enough of this kitchen, especially that wall of windows! The herringbone stone floor goes so well with the black cabinets!

Wood Kitchens

You can’t go wrong with wood cabinets. The thing you want to keep in mind is the tone of the wood. Honey Oak is a big no-no. Try to stay away from that early 2000’s oak as well. You know, the one that has lots of orange in it.

This gorgeous kitchen has wooden cabinets on the bottom and white painted on top. Adding wood accents on the shelves and flooring really brings it all together.

This all-wood kitchen screams family gathering. I bet this is the room everyone goes to when they get together. It’s gorgeous with the wood floors and cabinets with white counters.

Another all-wood kitchen here that is a bit lighter. You can decide what works best for you depending on the amount of light your kitchen receives.

What is the best paint finish for cabinets?

Kitchens are high-traffic areas and should have very durable finishes. The higher the gloss, the more durable and easier to clean the finish will be. Semi-gloss is typically chosen.

Satin and flat finishes have become very popular in recent years for a less shiny look. However, using high gloss can be dramatic and create a very stunning kitchen.

In the end, it’s all about the look you are going for and what is easier to clean.

Where to Find Cabinet Hardware and Light Fixtures

There are a lot of great places to buy hardware and light fixtures. I love my Restoration Hardware knobs and pulls in my kitchen so much that I added them to my built-ins in my basement family room.

Wayfair is another great option for finding what you need. They also have fabulous light fixtures. I have bought a few there.

I also like Pottery Barn, Amazon, and Rejuvenation.
