What are the undertones of Benjamin Moore Gray Mist?

Gray Mist is a fabulous warm neutral paint color that is from the off-white collection at Benjamin Moore. The undertones tend to lean a little green in this color. I do believe though that the color will show up as a neutral in most cases.

What is Gray Mist’s LRV?

Just in case you don’t know what LRV is, I have a whole blog post explaining it here. In a nutshell, it’s how dark or light a color is. The higher the number, the brighter the color.

Gray Mist sits at 72.83, making it a pretty bright color. If you want a color that is going to lighten and brighten a space, this would be a good option.

How to know if a paint color is right for you?

The best way to judge if a color is good for you then you will want to put a swatch on the wall and look at it over a few days. Look at it in different lights and decide if you really like it.

You can do this by getting a sample from the paint store and using a brush to put it up on the walls, but then you are left with a can that you can’t do anything with. Those samples are used with poor-quality paint and aren’t meant for use on your walls permanently.

I recommend going with Samplize. They are a company that will send you a 12X12 peel-and-stick swatch of a paint color that you can stick to the wall. When you are done, just peel it off and throw it away.

It’s easy and much less messy!

What is the best trim color to go with Gray Mist?

I would go with a trim color that has a high LRV so you have some contrast with Gray Mist. I personally would choose Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace.

My second choice would be BM Simply White, and lastly, White Dove.

Another unique option is to paint both the walls and the trim/doors with Gray Mist. Because it’s such a light color that flow in the room will be very nice. There won’t be anything to break up the color.

What are the best coordinating colors?

Gray Mist pairs really well with almost every other color there is. If I had to give you some ideas though I would pair it with dark and moody colors to give a dramatic contrast. Soft blues and greens would look great with this color as well as earthy neutrals.

What are some similar colors?

Let’s look at how Gray Mist compares with other colors that are similar to it so you can really get a good look at the different undertones. This might help you in making a decision on which color is right for you.

Gray Mist vs. Going to the Chapel

Would you like to save this?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

Benjamin Moore says this color is the closest to Gray Mist, but I have to differ. There is another that we will get to that is even closer.

The LRVs of these colors are nearly identical, but the real difference comes in the undertones. As you can probably already see, Going to the Chapel has much stronger green undertones than Gray Mist.

Gray Mist vs. Pale Oak

Pale Oak is slightly darker but not by all that much. The undertones are what make these colors differ. Gray Mist leans green, but very neutral. Pale Oak is more on the taupey side. However, I do consider these two very close.

Gray Mist vs. Swiss Coffee

Gray Mist vs. Classic Gray

I am not going to lie, Classic Gray is my ride or die. I love this color. It has pretty much the same LRV as Gray Mist, but the undertones are different. Gray Mist leans green, and Classic Gray is a little cooler with touches of green and violet. I think Classic Gray is slightly more neutral than Gray Mist.

Gray Mist vs. Balboa Mist

When you put them side by side, you can see these are very different colors. Balboa Mist is darker with an LRV in the upper 60’s (still considered a bright color though). And the undertones are different. Gray Mist has green undertone,s and Balboa Mist leans violet.

Gray Mist vs. Fog Mist

These two colors are nearly identical! Fog Mist is a couple of points darker on the LRV scale, and it has stronger green undertones than Gray Mist, but other than that, they are so close!!!

Is Benjamin Moore Gray Mist a good exterior color?

Whenever you are looking for an exterior color, you have to remember that the color is going to be so much brighter than it is on the interior of the home. For this reason, whites are usually recommended.

That makes Gray Mist a great option because it’s an off-white with a lower LRV than a lot of whites but with a touch of gray, it keeps the color from being so washed out.

So final answer, YES!

Is Benjamin Moore Gray Mist a good choice for cabinets?

Again, YES!

If you want a light and bright kitchen but don’t want to go all the way with white, then Gray Mist is a fabulous color to choose!

Is Gray Mist a good choice for the whole interior of the home?

On this one, I am going to have to say, HECK YES! This color will bring life to your home without making it feel too stark. It will look good no matter what kind of sunlight it receives. I say go for it!
