I get asked a lot about paint colors. One of the questions is what is teal? Teal is a color that is a combination of blue and green. It’s generally darker in nature.

A modern teal paint color is going to have blue and green but also gray in it. Gray has this amazing feature of calling down other paint colors and making the overall color more muted.

How to know if a paint color is right for you?

The best way to judge if a color is good for you then you will want to put a swatch on the wall and look at it over a few days. Look at it in different lights and decide if you really like it.

You can do this by getting a sample from the paint store and using a brush to put it up on the walls, but then you are left with a can that you can’t do anything with. Those samples are used with poor quality paint and aren’t meant for use on your walls permanently.

I recommend going with Samplize. They are a company that will send you a 12X12 peel and stick swatch of a paint color that you can stick to the wall. When you are done just peel it off and throw it away.

It’s easy and much less messy!

It’s amazing how different light sources can make a color look different. As you can see from the swatch this is a dark teal color but in the dining room photo, it looks much more blue in the cool northern light.

Deep Sea Dive is a teal color with an LRV of 10, making it pretty dark. Its gray undertones mutes the blue and green and evoke a feeling of restfulness.

Riverway is also a darker teal with an LRV of 16. It’s a gorgeous cool blue with green and gray undertones.

This color leans a bit more green but that can change depending on the time of day and the type of light a room receives. It’s a true chameleon but an absolutely stunning color.

Still Water

Still Water is exactly what the name is, a gorgeous dark blue with green and gray undertones. It’s like looking into a deep lake.

This color has an LRV of 10, making it really dark. Colors like this are perfect neutrals because they are dark, have gray in them which mutes the other colors, and are a perfect backdrop for allowing your accessories to make the statement in a room.

Tempe Star

Tempe Star is a gorgeous teal with strong green and gray undertones. As you can see I used it on a dresser in my daughter’s bedroom. It shows more blue in this photo but in real life, it is a strong teal and is the statement piece in the room.

I love pairing teal colors with brushed gold. I have the mirror above and the hardware for the dresser in gold.

Best Teal Paint Colors from Benjamin Moore

It’s funny but Sherwin Williams doesn’t call many of these colors teal. It calls them blue with green and gray undertones.

Benjamin Moore on the other hand calls it like it is. These are their best teal colors.

Gibraltar Cliffs is by far one of the lightest mentioned here for teal colors. Its LRV is 31.77, making it a medium-toned paint color.

This color has almost equal parts blue, gray, and green. Some people call it a gray with blue/green undertones, but Benjamin Moore says it’s a blue with green and gray undertones. Either way, it’s beautiful and a great color to choose if you want a lighter teal.

Newburg Green

Nocturne Blue

Nocturne Blue can be argued about whether it is actually a teal. It’s a gorgeous blue with green and gray undertones, but the blues really take over in certain light.

This color is dark with an LRV of 7. It is reminiscent of stargazing in the deep summer.

Mountain Pine

As you can see it looks amazing with white, black, as well as the brown in the leather chair. This is a great color for a nursery, kids room, office, and family room. I would also consider using it on wainscoting and furniture.

Dragonfly
