Simple DIY Projects

Paint Something

Paint can make a huge impact on your home. Use paint on the walls of a room and the entire space feels different. Or consider adding an accent wall in a dark or bold color.

I added a sage green accent wall in my daughter’s bedroom with the other walls white and it’s gorgeous!

Painting the interior of your doors a bold color or white to change up the feel of your spaces. Or give your front door a fun pop of color!

Painting furniture is also a great way to update a piece without having to go buy something new.

Paint is also a really cheap way to update your home. If you are new to painting make sure you check out my post on how to prep your walls to get a smooth finish.

Add Wood to Your Walls

Wood accents can make a huge difference in a space. It adds texture and sophistication. This is also one of my favorite things to do, and it makes a large impact!

Here you can see I added picture molding to my bedroom walls. You can paint it the same color as the walls or a contrasting color for a more bold look.

In my dining room I added board and batten and took it 2/3 the way up the walls with a bold color on the wall above. You don’t have to go as high as I did, you can do a more standard height for wainscoting.

In my laundry room I added shiplap and painted it white to brighten up the space (I should say in my laundry closet!). Before I did this the walls were a really dark gray and pretty banged up.

Another really easy wood you can add to your walls is beadboard! It comes in 4 foot by 8 foot sheets at the hardware store. I just nailed it up and added some trim and my entryway was transformed.

Also, it holds up to the kids bumping their shoes against the wall and the dog running by and brushing up against it better than drywall.

Please excuse the laundry basket in the background! Oops!

I also added beadboard to my Mom’s laundry room/mud room. We put it on the wall and then painted it a dark, bold color. It’s gorgeous!

Create Your Own Artwork

Art can be expensive and if you are anything like me I like to change my artwork often, which is not good for the wallet.

So I try to create my own artwork as often as I can!

Here my daughter and I created spackle art for her college apartment. I love getting my family involved!

My daughter also created these for her dorm room as a freshman. It had pictures of friends and family and fun things she downloaded from the internet. Then she added an epoxy for a stylish look.

I also created this piece for a large open space on the exterior of our home and it only cost $20!

Create a Gallery Wall

I love decorating the walls with pictures of my family, especially my grandkids! I created a gallery wall around my tv. It’s a very large wall so I used very large photos and did them in black and white so it wouldn’t be too much for the eyes when watching tv.

How did I get them all lined up so well? I used a laser level, it was game changing!

Hang Window Treatments

I love a good light-blocking window treatment for the bedroom. And for those crazy corner windows, I used a corner curtain rod. There are some really unique windows out there and just as unique as curtain rods. You just need to do some research.

Above you can see my dining room and I added curtains as a soft frame for the windows. They are purely decorative, not functional.

Build a Small Piece of Furniture

Sometimes you just need something to store blankets or a bench. You don’t need to buy it when you can build it!

I built a blanket ladder to store blankets in a pretty way.

I also built a bench for the foot of my daughter’s bed. It was super easy to do. I even upholstered it which you don’t need to do.

And for my kitchen, I created a coffee bar using plumbing pipes and wood. It’s very industrial looking.

Thank god I upgraded from that ugly white coffee maker! That thing lasted forever and I was pretty happy when it died, lol.

Organize Something

Organizing your home can make such a big difference to how it feels. I cannot stand when my home is cluttered and messy. That’s why I love to organize and make it feel more structured. Here are some areas I have done that made a huge impact.

That tupperware drawer…yeah, it’s always the big one that everyone gets frustrated with. Here are some great tips on how to get it organized and keep it organized.

How about your closets? My daughter is a huge clothes horse. I completely reconfigured her double closet to get all her things into it and easily available when she needed them.

Kitchen cabinets and jewelry are other areas that always need to be kept organized. And then there is the garage! Oh my garage is currently undergoing a complete overhaul and I have lots of great inspiration available to you.

Create a Vegetable Garden

There is nothing better than growing your own veggies and nourishing your family with great food. I built a raised garden bed and grew enough tomatoes for my husband to have for his sandwiches and make enough salsa for me to enjoy all year long!

Make a Wreath for Your Front Door (or an interior door)

I love to change out my wreath for different seasons and holidays. My favorite wreaths are the ones I have made. Especially because I saved so much money on them!

Here is my winter wreath with my daughter holding it.
